Describe the world condition at the beginning of the twentieth century

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the world was being reshaped by rapid political, social, economic, and technological change. After World War I, the great empires began to lose control of their colonial possessions, while nationalism grew among the nations of the third world and indigenous leadership replaced foreign influence. Commerce then carried Western products and habits into those societies. World War II multiplied mass-produced goods, new technologies, communication, transportation, and conveniences, turning people's attention toward material and worldly concerns. The church struggled to keep pace with the changing society. The First World and the Communist Second World were divided by the Cold War, while the Third World became a focus of humanitarian aid. Rationalism and evolutionism also weakened confidence in divine revelation and helped spread liberal theology. Yet this troubled and changing world became a setting in which God brought revival and renewed people’s hunger for biblical truth.

Explain the initiation, expansion, and the significance of the Welsh Revival (1904-1906)

The Welsh Revival began in 1904 in Wales through Evan Roberts, a young evangelist who believed God was calling the church to prayer and revival. After intense personal prayer, he asked his pastor for permission to speak, and although only a small group first gathered, the meetings quickly grew. People prayed, worshiped, confessed sin, repented, reconciled relationships, and openly responded to the call to follow Christ. The meetings were often long and spontaneous, and the whole congregation seemed conscious of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Within two years, more than 100,000 people came to faith. Drunkenness and crime declined, taverns went bankrupt, and even judges reported that there were few cases. The revival spread beyond Wales across Europe and encouraged many young people to become student volunteer missionaries. Its significance was that it was a powerful, largely spontaneous work of prayer, repentance, evangelism, and transformed community life, preparing the way for further revival movements.

Discuss the evangelistic ministry of Billy Sunday

Billy Sunday was a former Major League Baseball player who was converted at the Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago in 1886. He became one of America’s leading revivalists, preaching more than 300 evangelistic campaigns in major cities and seeing more than 593,000 people make decisions for Christ. Because ordinary buildings were too small, businessmen built large temporary structures called ‘Billy Sunday Tabernacles.’ His 1917 New York campaign recorded 98,264 professions of faith and involved more than 50,000 volunteers. Sunday was a forceful, colorful preacher whose voice could be heard by thousands without electronic amplification, and he urged people to come forward and publicly commit themselves to Christ. He preached against sin and championed moral reform, including opposition to child labor, support for women’s suffrage, opposition to alcohol, and resistance to evolution and other social evils. Working with Homer Rodeheaver, he used enthusiastic singing and very large choirs to prepare people for the invitation. His ministry combined evangelistic preaching, public decisions, music, and social reform, and it helped shape revivalism in the United States.
